Tapesonic 70-TRSH Reel-Reel Made By Premier Electronic Labs Of NY Nice ConditionThis listing is for a beautiful condition Tapesonic 1/2 track reel to reel tape deck. This is one of those potential projects that seemed like a great idea at the time. I bought this with the intentions of restoring it, but unfortunately that's unlikely to happen.
Here is what I know about it:
It was built by Premier Electronics in the early 70's. They were handmade by a couple of craftsmen who were known throughout the professional industry for their excellent quality. You would order the machine directly from Premier, then a couple of months later you would receive your deck. Thus,
they are not terribly common. The company had produced exceptional hand built machines since the 1940's.
This machine is in wonderful cosmetic condition. The Tolex case is in excellent shape, very little if any damage. The front panel likewise is excellent. There are no
scratches
, cracked or missing knobs, all switches work as they should. There are two
caveats... The tape head cover and the plastic portion of the handle are missing. Otherwise, inside and out this is a very clean, complete Tapesonic machine.
Electrically, it has not been restored. It powers on, the playback amplifiers work, but the transport is sluggish. The Pabst capstan motor runs as it should, but the torque of the take-up and supply reel motors is low. Fast forward and rewind are for all practical purposes inoperative. This machine will need lubrication and should have a complete restoration in order to make it fully functional. All playback and record amplifier cards are there (four total) as is the bias oscillator. The heads look to be in great condition, the adjustment screws have not been tampered with. All power and meter lamps are illuminated. I see no indication that this deck has been modified or otherwise molested.
This is a very good candidate for restoration, which is why I purchased it. It appears to have sat around for years, spending a good part of it's life in storage. It is similar in design to some of the "portable" Ampex machines of the era. It's lighter, the maintenance is simpler and when restored works beautifully. My uncle had an earlier tube version the Tapesonic... it sounded superb... another reason I got this.
This deck is very heavy, 65 pounds. I would think it would weigh approximately 75lbs with packing. It has been my experience that heavy items tend to be prone to damage. For this reason, I will have it professionally packed and add a handling fee of for this service. Of course the buyer will be responsible for shipping costs as well.
Shipped via UPS Ground. Weight is 75lbs. Packed dimensions will be approximately 24"W x 25"T x 13"D
